      Meet Jaya and Kãmil

Welcome! A little about us... We are sisters from Leicester in the UK, both working as healthcare professionals. Our heritage on our father's side is Black Afro-Caribbean and on our mother's side White English. Dad is highly educated on matters related to race after spending years learning through university, self teaching and working with young people, so we grew up in a house full of books on race with regular debates and open dialogue about it. The Black Lives Matter movement and in particular the death of George Floyd and following protests have affected us personally in ways that many people, particularly white people, didn't seem to understand. We started to read more, learn more and post on Facebook to raise awareness and start conversations.

These conversations on our Facebook pages (particularly Kãmil's) allowed us to discuss questions around race in a calm way with our friends and family who, because of where we grew up, are mostly white. We have shared both facts and feelings with the people who are important to us and many contacted us to say how much reading these conversations helped them to understand what is going on and how others are feeling.
